Auto Publishing

In a time of shrinking newsrooms, editorial staff are often faced with an increased burden of preparing content for multiple channels. If some of the time spent doing standard pages can be automated, valuable time can be made available to grow a digital, multi-channel presence.

The process is governed by a series of rules that are fine-tuned and managed by editorial staff. The principle is simple: pre-build a series of templates, shapes, assign category labels to pages, tag individual articles and define a variety of rules that guide the auto-fitting procedure.

Creating layout options for the auto publishing process
To perform the auto pagination, some conditions must be satisfied. For example, individual articles must already exist and have elements (such as images, captions, by lines, headlines and body text) associated. The articles must also be assigned to the edition or placed in a specific folder.

The pages must also already exist in the database. In a typical workflow, these pages are created after the import of layouts from an ROP ad planning system.

When the auto pagination process starts (typically a category at a time), it collects all available pages tagged with the required category, analyzes the available space on each page (so it knows how big the task is), identifies all the articles that have been assigned to the edition, match the category, and have been flagged for use in the auto process and starts fitting content using pre-defined layouts and shapes. This is an iterative process and the more layouts and shapes that exist in the library, the better the end result will be.

The auto process is blisteringly fast and can paginate as many as 30 pages in less than a minute! When complete, pages can be scrutinized by newsroom staff prior to releasing. A report that summarizes which pages were completed and what content was used, is automatically created.

For newsrooms, tablets are also playing an increased role. Not just as a news channel, but also in the way content is captured, authored and edited. Now, with GNi4, editorial users can add a broad range of mobile devices, making them even more productive, wherever they are, using whatever tool is available.

Thanks to the HTML5 design, GNi4 can be used on practically any connected device; iOS, Android, Mac OSX, Windows 7 & 8, netbooks or Chromebooks.

When combined with other Miles 33 products such as GNXcapture for smartphones, or GNPortal for web access, the GN4 newsroom becomes a true virtual workplace. Users can be anywhere, yet collaborate with (and maintain in full contact with) all the resources the newsroom offers.

Users can access all areas in the system they have approved access to: images, video, audio, articles, wire, archives and even print edition status. Content can be searched, retrieved, opened and edited, based on user privileges.

The user’s workspace is customizable and multiple workspaces can be saved into a tabbed view. Queries and searches can be saved in a similar manner allowing users to create workspaces for accessing wire, searching archives or day-to-day writing.



GNXcapture becomes a true extension of the normal newsroom functionality allowing newsroom management to include remote users in their planning. With GnXCapture a remote user is never isolated from the newsroom.

Either working from a task, or by creating a new story, users can “package” multiple files together into a single content package. For example, when covering some event, the journalist can package together a video of the scene, a recorded interview with an eyewitness, a few pictures and even type out some comments or information. When done, the entire package can be submitted directly into the newsroom. Pre-defined workflows will accept packages submitted that way and deliver them to the right location in the GN4 content management system, complete with metadata.

GNXcapture even allows the user to search the GN4 system to retrieve content and, optionally, edit it (providing the user has all the appropriate privileges of course).
